The Brooklyn Museum's lantern slide collection was started by the museum's curator of fine arts, William Henry Goodyear, in the late nineteenth century. With the assistance of photographers Joseph Hawkes and John McKecknie, Goodyear reproduced images of archaeological and architectural sites in Europe and images of the Paris Exposition, which Hawkes often hand-colored for more realistic effect. William Henry Goodyear (1846-1923) was an art and architectural historian and the Brooklyn Museum of Art's first Curator of Fine Arts from 1899-1923, an appointment he accepted soon after serving as curator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1881-1888).
